Compassionate Cancer Care & Research in Assam

Established in 1996, Cachar Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (CCHRC) is a non-profit, tertiary care oncology center located in Silchar, Assam. Our mission is to provide accessible, affordable, and high-quality cancer care to the people of Northeast India, regardless of their socio-economic background.

We operate with a holistic approach, combining advanced medical treatment with compassionate palliative care, psychological support, and community outreach programs. The hospital is recognized by the National Cancer Grid (NCG) and the Government of India as a key center for cancer control in the region.

Our 150-bed facility is equipped with modern technology including Linear Accelerators for radiotherapy, advanced surgical suites, a dedicated chemotherapy ward, and a fully equipped laboratory for histopathology and molecular diagnostics. We believe in a multidisciplinary approach where medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, and palliative care specialists collaborate on each patient's case to develop the most effective treatment plan.

The Research Centre conducts epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and basic science research focused on cancers prevalent in the Northeast population, such as tobacco-related and HPV-associated cancers. Our work has contributed significantly to the national cancer registry and public health policy.

The Research Centre at CCHRC is dedicated to understanding the unique cancer burden of Northeast India and developing context-specific solutions. Our work spans basic, translational, clinical, and population sciences.

Key Research Areas

• Epidemiology & Registry: Maintaining a population-based cancer registry for the Cachar district, studying incidence patterns, risk factors, and survival outcomes.
• Tobacco-Related Cancers: Research on genetic susceptibility, biomarkers, and interventions for cancers of the lung, oral cavity, and esophagus, which are highly prevalent in our region.
• HPV & Cervical Cancer: Studies on HPV genotype distribution, screening methods, and vaccination acceptability to combat cervical cancer, a leading cause of cancer death among women in Assam.
• Palliative Care Research: Evaluating models of community-based palliative care, pain assessment tools, and psychosocial interventions.
• Clinical Trials: Phase II and III trials of new chemotherapy regimens, targeted therapies, and supportive care drugs in collaboration with national and international cooperative groups.

Our findings are published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. We believe in open science and collaborate with institutions like the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Tata Memorial Centre, and universities worldwide.

Education & Training

CCHRC is a teaching hub for oncology in Northeast India. We offer:

• Fellowship programs in Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, and Palliative Medicine recognized by the National Board of Examinations.
• Training for nurses in oncology and palliative care.
• Internships for medical and nursing students from across India.
• Continuous medical education (CME) programs for practicing doctors.
